Piano Soundboard

The function of the soundboard in a piano is to amplify and modify the vibrations initiated by the strings.
All soundboards have a crown - an arch which helps the soundboard resist the downward pressure of the strings
(remember, 15 tons of pressure or more).  In quality pianos, the soundboard is made of solid spruce.
