When you think of piano keys, you most
likely think of what is pictured above.
But the truth is, piano keys are much longer. Take a look at these old keys from a piano which is being repaired:
Piano keys are usually made from spruce or basswood.
In years gone by, the black keys were made from ebony and the white keys were coated with ivory.
Since the demand for ebony is greater than the supply and
since we would prefer to see a real elephant rather than use its tusks for piano keys,
most key coatings are now made out of plastic.
